Art in Situ Turns the Coat Into Protection, Portrait and Collectible Art

Melbourne wearable-art label Art in Situ presents Check Your Six, exploring vigilance, resilience and the protective possibilities of clothing.

Founded in Melbourne in 2025, Art in Situ creates one-of-a-kind garments at the intersection of fashion, storytelling and artistic expression.

Working with curated textiles including repurposed fabrics and globally sourced materials, the label approaches each piece as an individual artwork. Every garment contains original artwork and an edition number and is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity detailing its artist, materials and provenance, together with a personal letter telling the story behind the work.

For SS27, Check Your Six centres on the coat as a garment of protection.

The title draws on the military expression meaning “look behind you”. Painted female portraits inside each piece extend that idea, depicting women looking sideways and forwards.

Together, these elements reflect the heightened awareness experienced by many women and others who feel a continual need to remain alert to their surroundings.

Through portraiture, textile and construction, each one-of-a-kind coat becomes simultaneously artwork, clothing and protection — exploring confidence, resilience and self-worth while challenging conventional boundaries between fashion and collectible art.

Art in Situ presents Check Your Six at 2.30pm on Sunday 20 September at Devonshire Square, London.
